Lupus is an autoimmune disease that is little understood and often un- or misdiagnosed. It has many conflicting and elusive symptoms, can strike with no warning and has no known cause or cure. To attempt to raise more awareness for the condition, and more money to lead to better treatments, and hopefully a cure, the Lupus Foundation of America has launched the 11-market Help Us Solve the Cruel Mystery National Tour.
The program, anchored with a branded tour bus, is visiting Boston, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York City, Raleigh, NC, Richmond, VA and San Francisco before wrapping up at the Lupus National Advocacy conference in Washington D.C. in June. The experience focuses on education, with eight interactive exhibits designed to help novices learn about lupus, a program designed specifically for people with lupus and their families and a continuing medical education program for healthcare professionals. The foundation is driving visitors to its website at cruelmystery.org to collect their signatures on a petition that requests more funding for lupus research. The foundation will present the petition to Congress during its final stop.
“It’s all about awareness and understanding the seriousness of the disease,” Mary Crimmings, vp-marketing communications at the Lupus Foundation of America, told Buzz. “Greater awareness will translate to more people pushing for more research and funding, which is what we really want.”
