France Telecom Academic Camp Keeps Developers Sharp

France Telecom relies on thousands of independent application developers to create the technology that keeps its Orange mobile service on the leading edge.

So when the company was planning a seminar to share the latest technical info with top developers and strengthen their loyalty to the company, Orange knew a standard corporate meeting wouldn’t do. That led to Orange Code Camp, which took 250 developers on a camping-themed educational expedition—48 hours of classes and workshops at the Futuroscope Entertainment Park in Poitiers, France.

Attendees received branded camping gear, and the venue was decorated with images of forests, lakes and tents. In addition to the educational sessions, Orange provided a relaxation zone (beanbag chairs, music, movies, arcade games) and passes to the theme park.

At camp’s end, 87 percent of attendees said the event helped them with their current applications, and 48 percent said they would deliver their work-in-progress to Orange within three months.
