On June 19 HSBC celebrated its role as the category sponsor of Wimbledon by activating on the sponsorship for the first time in the U.S. The bank staged tennis matches on mini courts set up outside HSBC branches near Lincoln Center Columbus Circle on Madison Avenue and at the bank’s headquarters on Fifth Avenue. Fans and customers could jump onto the court for a chance to play with former tennis champ Jim Courier and nine-time Grand Slam champion Monica Seles.

HSBC has created similar events in India United Arab Emirates the U.K. and other international locations but this is the first time it has activated its Wimbledon partnership in the U.S.

“We wanted to bring Wimbledon to life for New Yorkers who may never get a chance to experience it for themselves ” Dawn Fichot assistant vp-marketing communications told Buzz. “Being the World’s Local Bank [the brand’s tagline] it’s very important for us globally to do things like this. ”

During Wimbledon (June 23 to July 6) HSBC is giving away free strawberries and cream from branded carts at several branch locations throughout New York City. At branches consumers can also enter to win an all-expense paid trip for two to Wimbledon in 2009. On June 24 the brand hosted a free tennis clinic for underprivileged kids at the West Side Tennis Club in Queens—home to one of the last grass courts in the city.
