Educational Charity TopSpin Serves Up Ping-Pong for Kids

Now in its third year, TopSpin, a ping-pong tournament and fundraising event for the professional sports industry, has expanded from New York City to include events in Chicago, San Francisco, and at least one other city, yet to be determined. On Dec. 8 in New York City, the group hosted more than 200 players and 1,000 guests in a loft in SoHo where they played, partied and raised money. Celebrity dj D-Nice pumped the tunes and the bar was open during the silent auction which offered premium vacations and experiences and a wide variety of celebrity memorabilia.

TopSpin more than doubled its attendance from its first to second year and saw that there was interest in expanding into the other major markets it has chosen for 2011-2012. It raised more than $300,000 just in its first two years and helped three New York City nonprofits, and this year plans to fund at least 12 charities across all markets with a goal of raising at least $1 million. The organization invited more than 2,000 celebrities and sports figures to play in the tourneys and donate to the cause of improving educational resources for urban children.

“We wanted to be able to focus on reaching more communities and bringing together even more entertainment, sports and media celebrities to raise awareness about our organization and its mission,” Jasmine Andrews, managing director at TopSpin, told Buzz. “We are hoping to highlight our local partners and sponsors and help out local educational initiatives, all within our mission of youth education.” Agency: MKTGINC4GOOD, the community service arm of MKTG INC, New York City.
